Day 3: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado

Meet your transfer to the airport for an early flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado in the Amazon rainforest. Upon arrival, a representative will meet you at the airport and accompany you to the port for your transfer by river-boat to your jungle lodge.

As you leave the city of Puerto Maldonado behind, you’ll soon be enveloped in the completely different world of the surrounding rainforest as you travel up the Tambopata River with the jungle’s canopy towering on either side.

Upon arrival at the lodge, you will have time to settle in and relax as well as meet your seasoned guide and learn about the variety of activities that you will enjoy during your stay.

Many of the lodges are located within the territory of the ‘Ese’eja’ native community, and are built with the same materials and architectural techniques as those used by native communities throughout the Amazon, allowing for a truly authentic experience. In the evening, you will be treated with a delicious dinner and have the rest of the evening at your leisure.

Note: Flight must arrive in Puerto Maldonado before 12:00 PM.

The mornings tend to be the best time of day to see a variety of exquisite wildlife. You will then return to the lodge for lunch, before setting out for another adventure with your expert guide.

This afternoon will focus on flora, and your guide will walk with you through the tantalizing forest, pointing out hidden jungle inhabitants and numerous indigenous plants.

After a well-earned dinner, you will head out into the jungle again for a stimulating night walk. Once the sun goes down, the jungle comes to life with a completely new assortment of nocturnal, cacophonous creatures that come out to roam.

The city is at a high altitude, so you may spend the remainder of the day taking it easy as you acclimatize overnight in Cusco. A top tip would be to drink lots of water and of course the famous Coca-tea, readily provided at the hotel.

Day 6: Cusco – Chinchero – Maras – Moray – Ollantaytambo

Leaving Cusco behind, you commence your journey to the gem of the Americas, Machu Picchu.

Explore the beautiful Peruvian Andes with a full-day tour of the breathtaking Sacred Valley. First, you will visit the famous weaving-town of Chinchero (3,762 m, 12,342 ft).

It is a site that presents exceptional expressions of stonemasonry in the midst of a town that keeps ancient traditions alive. It was constructed by Tupac Inca Yupanqui around 1480 and consists of a collection of architectural spaces: pre-Columbian walls, enclosures, platforms, staircases and altars.

The historic center of Chinchero is also considered unique because it mixes an archaeological complex and a town made from Incan foundations and walls, with a population that has maintained its ancestral customs.

Following your visit to Chinchero, you will be taken to the mystical circular ruins of Moray.

While some believe it was a landing pad for alien spaceships, it is more likely that the Incas built this as an experimental agricultural center, shining light on their architectural prowess. Concentric circular terraces allowed them to simulate varied facing slopes and different growing temperatures to see which crops would grow where.

Next, are the fascinating salt mines of Maras. Hidden deep within the Urubamba valley, lies – almost unknown to all the hordes visiting Machu Picchu every day – a precious gem: The Maras Salt mines, also called Maras salt evaporation ponds.

A myriad of salt crusted terraces precariously nestles against the steep mountain sides, while a steady stream of mineral rich water trickles down with a silent gargling that somehow defies time.

The ponds, you ought to know, have been in use even before the period of the Incas. They are an outstanding attraction in the humble town of Maras, that simply should not be missed!

Finally, you will visit the remarkable fortress of Ollantaytambo (2,792 m/9,160 ft). These magnificent ancient ruins provide a great vantage point from which to admire the Sacred Valley.

Originally, the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti, during the Incan Empire, this site later served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui in the final resistance effort against the ruthless Spanish conquistadors.

You will stop for lunch on route to Ollantaytambo (not included) at a buffet restaurant offering a variety of enticing Peruvian and international food near the town of Urubamba.

At the quaint town of Ollantaytambo, you will check in to your comfortable hotel for another restful night. Dinner will be at a local restaurant in Ollantaytambo (not included).

  • Meals: Breakfast (no other meals included on this day)
  • Accommodations: Hotel in Ollantaytambo
  • Lowest Elevation: 3,400 m/11,154 ft
  • Highest Elevation: 3,700 m/12,139 ft
  • Difficulty: Easy

Day 7: Start of the Short Inca Trail

Early in the morning, we will pick you up from your Ollantaytambo hotel and walk to the train station to board the iconic train that will take us to KM 104 (starting point of the Short Inca Trail hike). Once at KM 104, we start our trek to Machu Picchu day visiting the Chachabamba archaeological complex (2150 m/7052 ft), located very close to the Inca Trail check point, to then embark on a 3 ½ hours uphill hike to the archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna (2650m/8692ft).

This is an impressive Incan site made up of an agricultural center with numerous terraces, an area of religious worship and a housing area.

During the hike from Chachabamba to Wiñay Wayna, we will have magnificent views of the Urubamba River valley and the Choquesuysuy archaeological Incan site all surrounded by the mountains, as well as a stunning waterfall located just a few minutes before we arrive at Wiñay Wayna.

We then continue our hike for 2 hours up and down sections until finally we reach the Sun Gate (main entry to one of the new seven wonders of the world from the Inca Trail).

From this spellbinding location, we will contemplate our first views of Machu Picchu. After we have had time to admire the spectacle, we embark on a 45-minute descent, walking to Machu Picchu where we can take a bus to the nearby town of Aguas Calientes.

We are then accommodated at one of the tranquil Machu Picchu hotels of Aguas Calientes  for a well-deserved rest. Dinner will be at one of the local Machu Picchu restaurants in town (drinks not included).

The hotel will prepare an early breakfast for you before we meet to take a very early bus (5:30 a.m.) along the winding road back to the ancient city. As we gradually climb to the sacred city, we should be lucky enough to see the magnificent sunrise over the Andes.

All of our guides are experts and enthusiasts in the history and legends of Machu Picchu, and so the 2-hour tour of the site will be sure to bring the city to life. Of course, there will be plenty of time to take your once-in-a-lifetime photos of the city….and of the wild Llamas roaming the terraces!

If you choose to climb Huayna Picchu mountain, you will begin the hike promptly at 10 a.m. (the cost for hiking Huayna Picchu Mountain is NOT included in the trip price).

If you are not climbing the mountain, you will have more time to consolidate the unique site of the ancient city on your own, before you return to Aguas Calientes by bus.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes we board the expedition train to either Poroy or Ollantaytambo.

From the train station we will transfer you in our minivan to your Cusco hotel. Arrival time in Cusco depends on the time of your train ticket, but it is generally between 7 and 8 p.m.

We will pick you up from your hotel early in the morning (5 am), and have a beautiful scenic drive of 2 hours observing vast rivers and incredulous mountain peaks to the town of Mollepata situated above the Apurimac River.

At Mollepata we will have an invigorating breakfast at one of the local houses to prepare you for the day ahead. After breakfast we will get back on the road for 1 hour until we reach Soraypampa, where we commence the hike.

During this portion of the drive, we will see our first views of the imposing, snow-capped Salkantay and Humantay Mountains, as well as observe lush, green vegetation and the fields of local families growing traditional potatoes, quinoa, lima beans and other local treasures.

At Soraypampa (3,800 m/12,467 ft) We will begin our hike to visit the remarkable, high-altitude lake, Humantay. It is directly below the Humantay glacier, and stunningly blue …in fact, we should probably call it turquoise! This is an astonishing 2 ½ hour round trip excursion that will always remain a captivating memory.

After exploring and taking our lovely photos of this magical location we will have our organic packed-lunch around the lake and savor the magnificent views. After lunch, we return to Soraypampa from where we have a 2-hour drive back to Cusco to relax.

We will drop you off at your Cusco hotel around 5 pm, no doubt exhausted but with incredible memories of a unique day.

Rainbow Mountain PeruDay 10: Cusco – Vinicunca / Rainbow Mountain – Cusco

To make the most of our time on the trail and at the rainbow mountain, our day will start before dawn.

We will collect you from your Cusco hotel at around 3 am before embarking on a 3-hour drive through the South Valley to the trail head at Llacto (4,638m / 15,216 ft).

Our transportation is comfortable, though, and we provide blankets for those who want to take the opportunity for a little more sleep. Upon reaching the Cusipata village (3,300 m/10,826 ft), we will provide a full continental breakfast, the perfect fuel for the hike ahead.

Our trek begins along a meandering path in the foothills of the magnificent Andes. As dawn continues to break around us, the surrounding herds of Alpacas and Llamas will be waking and our paths often cross along the way.

The area is home to many Fincas (local farms) and there will be opportunities to see traditional Quechua folk working the land as they have for generations.

The surrounding forests are also home to some unique fauna and we may see Chinchillas or even Vicunas (a non-domesticated relative of the llama family found only in Peru) so make sure you have your cameras and binoculars ready.

As if all that wasn’t enough, the striking colors of the red mountains are all around us, providing a spectacular backdrop for this portion of the hike.

After completing a challenging ascent for around 1 hour we reach the magnificent Rainbow Mountain of Vinicunca (5,020 m/16,466 ft). No Photoshop or Instagram filters are required here! This awesome display of color is 100% natural, and completely breathtaking. A truly inspiring summit to reach.

After taking our time at the summit to take pictures, explore the area or to simply absorb the spectacular views, we then take a short 15-minute walk to the Red Valley lookout point, a tranquil and beautiful spot amongst the crimson rocks that has magnificent views across the valley.

Your guide will let you know when it is time to return, and we will hike, downhill, the way we came for around 45 minutes. In a sense, this is an altogether different hike as we take in the thrilling views that were behind us on our challenging ascent.

Once we reach the trailhead, we will then drive 40 minutes to a local restaurant at Cusipata village. There, a delicious, rewarding lunch will be waiting for you.

To sum up the day, there will be a 2-hour drive back to Cusco. We’ll drop you off at your Cusco hotel around 1 p.m., weary but bursting with incredible memories of an amazing day!
