From Soraypampa, embark on the invigorating hike to Humantay Lake (4,200m / 13,779ft). This moderate to challenging uphill trail covers about 6 km (3.7 miles) round trip, with roughly 400m (1,312ft) of elevation gain.

Frequently Asked Questions: Humantay Lake 1-Day Hike

1.- What is the best time of year to visit Humantay Lake?

The ideal time is during Peru’s dry season, from April to October, when skies are clear, trails are drier, and the turquoise color of the lake shines brightest under sunny conditions. Peak months (May–September) offer the most stable weather, though it’s also the busiest. The rainy season (November–March) brings greener landscapes but muddy trails, fog, and potential rain—still possible, but less predictable.

2.- How difficult is the hike, and how long does it take?

The hike is moderate to challenging, mainly due to the high altitude and steep uphill sections (about 400m/1,312ft elevation gain over 3km/1.9 miles one way). Round trip is 6km/3.7 miles. Ascent typically takes 1.5–2 hours (longer if not acclimatized), and descent about 1 hour. It’s manageable for most with average fitness, but the thin air makes it feel tougher.

3.- Can I rent a horse if the hike is too difficult?

Yes! Horses (with a horseman) are available for rent at Soraypampa for the uphill portion (around USD $30–50, payable on-site). They take you most of the way, but you’ll still need to walk the final 10–20 minutes to the lake.

No horses for the descent – you’ll hike down on foot.

4.- How can I avoid or manage altitude sickness?

Humantay Lake sits at 4,200m/13,779ft, so altitude sickness is common if not prepared. Spend at least 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco first. Stay hydrated (drink plenty of water), avoid alcohol, eat light meals, and consider coca tea or leaves. Tours include oxygen bottles for emergencies. Walk slowly, take breaks, and descend if symptoms (headache, nausea, dizziness) worsen.

5.- What weather should I expect, and what should I wear?

Weather is unpredictable—cold mornings (around 5°C/41°F), warmer afternoons (up to 18°C/65°F), but windy and chilly at the lake.

Dress in layers: base layer, fleece, waterproof/windproof jacket, hat/gloves, and sturdy hiking shoes.

Bring a rain poncho (even in dry season), sunscreen (high UV at altitude), and sunglasses. Pack extra warm clothes for the early start and lake.

6.- Is swimming allowed in the lake?

No – swimming is prohibited to protect this sacred, glacial-fed site from contamination.

7.- Are there toilets or facilities on the trail?

Basic toilets are available at Soraypampa (small fee), but none at the lake itself. Snack shops and restrooms are at the trailhead.

8.- Will there be crowds?

Yes, especially in peak season – most tours arrive around the same time. Early morning light is stunning, but the lake gets busy mid-morning.

For fewer people, consider a private tour.

9.- Is this tour suitable for children or older adults?

Possible for fit kids (8+) and seniors, but the altitude and steep hike can be tough. Horse rental helps, but consult a doctor first for high-altitude concerns.

10.- What if it rains or the weather is bad?

Tours usually run rain or shine, but safety comes first. In extreme conditions, we may cancel or reschedule.

11.- Why choose us for this tour?
