Detailed Itinerary – Luxury Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu

Day 1: Cusco – Chinchero – Moray – Salt Mines and Ollantaytambo

Starting Elevation: 3,400 m/11,154 ft

Peak Elevation: 3,700 m/12,139 ft

The Sacred Valley is calling! You’re about to dive headfirst into the world of the Inca, and today’s just a taste of things to come.

First up: Chinchero. This place is alive with history. Its people keep age-old traditions going, surrounded by some seriously impressive ancient stonework.

Next, get your mind blown at the Inca Ruin of Moray. These deep bowl-shaped hollows look something like a Roman amphitheater, and have stair-like terraces climbing up to the valley above.

It’s believed that they were used as a massive farming experiment to figure out what grows best at different heights.

Then, it’s time for a seriously tasty lunch at MIL Centro. This is Gourmet Peruvian food at its best – fuel for the adventure!

Then, it’s the Maras Salt Mines. This UNESCO World Heritage location is slightly off the main tourist trail, but trust us, it’s worth it. Watch how they harvest salt today; in the same way they have for centuries.

Finally, behold Ollantaytambo. An emperor called it home once, and then it became a rebel stronghold. We’ll climb the stairs here for a Sacred Valley view that’ll knock your socks off.

Now, the journey continues!

A short walk (about 15 minutes) takes us to the train station and aboard the panoramic Vistadome – keep an eye out for glaciers, snowy peaks, and ancient Inca terraces painting the valley sides.

After this, we’ll roll into Aguas Calientes, and settle into your comfy hotel.

Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Starting Elevation: 2,040 m/6,693 ft

Peak Elevation: 2,430 m/7,972 ft

Time to rise and shine, because today’s the day!  Grab a good breakfast at your hotel –  both the Sumaq and Inkaterra hotels know how to set you up for an adventure.

Next, we’ll leave for our bus ride snaking up to Machu Picchu. This place is a legend for a reason.  Hidden for centuries, then rediscovered in 1911–photos don’t do it justice. Our guide will take you on a deep dive into its history.

Then, you’ll get to explore on your own.

We’ll grab the bus back to Aguas Calientes, before it’s time to relax in style: on the Hiram Bingham Train – this train isn’t just transport, it’s an experience.

Live music, gourmet food, and those views as you wind back down the valley; it’s the perfect way to end the day.

By the time you get back to Cusco, you’ll be tired, but in the best possible way.
