The Must-Have Inca Trail Packing List: Top 9 Essentials

Inca Trail to Machu PicchuDon’t book your flights without completing your Inca trail packing list! These 9 items not only make your trek safer, but they also make it easier to enjoy every second of your journey.

It can be tricky to know what to bring and what to leave behind. When you have limited space in your backpack, the pressure to make the right decision can be overwhelming. But don’t worry! we’ll make sure you don’t compromise your once-in-a-lifetime experience with a lackluster backpack.

Action Peru Treks is a local, Indigenous company that provides tours across Peru. Our destinations include Salkantay, Ancascocha, Machu Picchu, and many more.

1. Get a Comfortable, High-Quality Backpack For All Your Items

If your backpack is too small or slides down your shoulders, you’ll have a problem! Putting together a practical packing list for Inca trail starts with a backpack to hold everything in.

A travel-ready backpack should have the following features for your Inca trail hikes:

  • Adjustable straps for tightening or loosening
  • A waist strap to steady the backpack
  • Several pockets to hold various items
  • Waterproof material such as PVC or nylon
  • A weight limit that suits your frame

That last detail is especially important since you don’t want to be weighed down on the trail. Some backpacks have a weight limit of 15 lbs, while others can carry over 20 lbs. Before putting your Inca trail packing list together, practice carrying items at home to see what weight you’re comfortable with.

Inca Trail Packing List 2. Find an Insulated and Cozy Sleeping Bag

Take the time to find a sleeping bag that will keep you insulated during cold nights. The most comfortable sleeping bags are down or synthetic, offering a light weight that still keeps you cozy.

If you forget to pack a sleeping bag, you can rent one from us!

Remember your passport—you’ll need it to enter the Inca Trail and other hiking trails in Peru. It can’t be a photocopy and must match the passport you used to book your tour.

To be extra careful, purchase a portable lock box to store your passport. If you put this document in a backpack pocket, it could fall out or get stolen.

The Inca trail is a brilliant sight with its rolling green mountains and long, winding trails. The flipside of such a beautiful climate means dynamic weather patterns you need to prepare for.

While the Inca trail is often sunny, it can experience sudden rainfall or get very cold at night. May to October is the dry season, while April to November is the wet season. To be on the safe side, bring a variety of clothes for different weather types such as:

  • A weatherproof jacket with several pockets and a hood
  • A snug beanie for cold nights and a baseball cap for sunny days
  • Moisture-wicking hiking socks
  • A pair of thermal pajamas
  • Several pairs of hiking shorts and pants
  • Gloves and a scarf
  • A few pairs of underwear
  • A sports bra

What clothes should you absolutely not bring?

  • No regular bras
  • No pure cotton socks – you don’t want Athlete’s foot
  • No fancy clothes that you don’t want getting dirty

5. Durable Hiking Shoes are a Must for Comfort

If your shoes don’t fit well or aren’t built for the trail, you’re going to have a very unpleasant trip. Durable hiking shoes will help you walk comfortably, reduce slipping, and keep blisters at bay.

Waterproof hiking shoes or traditional hiking boots are both well-suited to your Inca trail packing list with features like:

  • Waterproof material
  • A strong grip
  • Comfortable fit (no pinching your toes)

While our dedicated tour company will make sure you’re safe, accidents can still happen. A first aid kit is helpful in case you accidentally scrape your knees or eat spoiled food.

A small first aid kit will easily fit into any backpack and should have:

  • Bandages and ointment
  • Rehydration sachet
  • Blister plasters
  • Diarrhea tablets
  • Hand sanitizer

7. Stock Up on Toiletries to Remain Clean and Comfortable

Our experienced team provides you with comfortable amenities before and after the trip. During your hike, you’ll still want to keep some toiletries on you for maximum comfort.

Below are the basics to keep you fresh, clean, and ready to enjoy your stunning Inca trail hikes:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Dry shampoo
  • Deodorant
  • Moisturizer
  • Sunscreen
  • Chapstick with sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • A small towel or rag

If you don’t want to take a freezing cold shower, consider bringing a pack of biodegradable wipes.

8. You Need a Snug Headtorch to Stay Safe

A headtorch (or headlamp) will make navigating a campsite or visiting other tents at night easier. They’re also helpful if you’re hiking early in the morning and it’s still fairly dark.

While you can buy a hand torch, you won’t have both hands free for a trekking pole or eating.

9. Consider a Few Extras to Make Your Trip More Enjoyable

Now that you’ve got the basics out of the way, consider adding on a few extras to make your trip even more comfortable.

Common additions many travelers like to add include:

  • A reusable water bottle
  • A pair of binoculars
  • A trekking pole (you can also rent one of these from us)
  • A power bank
  • A pair of sunglasses
  • A magazine or novel to read during downtime
