About Action Peru Treks

At Action Peru Treks, we make your dream Peru adventure come to life.

Setting the standard in Inca Trail trekking and Machu Picchu exploration since 2015, you can rely on our reliable and talented team of local guides to create a once-in-a-lifetime tour experience tailored to your travel goals and preferences.

Our Story

Action Peru Treks was founded as a local indigenous tour company in 2015 by Roxner Cardenas, a Peruvian native born and raised in a small community outside Machu Picchu. Roxner has trekked all his life. In fact, he was 12 years old when he first visited the majestic Machu Picchu. Amazed by the history and architecture of the ruins, he decided to study to be a guide so he could share his culture and the beauty of his country with others.

Since then, Roxner has guided hundreds of groups and individuals on various treks, including the Inca Trail, Ancascocha, Salkantay, Lares, and the Choquequirao trek. He has worked both as a porter and a tour guide, enabling trekkers and travelers from all over the world to navigate through diverse terrains and cultural landscapes.

This paved the way for Action Peru Treks to start operating as the only indigenous tour company in Peru. Over the years, we have established ourselves as a reputable tourism company that offers guided expeditions and immersive experiences in the Peruvian region.

Specializing in the Inca Trail, Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, and beyond, our goal is to unveil the rich culture, timeless allure, and breathtaking landscape of Peru’s ancient lands to people from different parts of the world, offering immersive experiences that foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of this remarkable region.

Action Peru Treks Promotes Sustainable Tourism

At Action Peru Treks, we don’t just deliver unique tours and amazing adventures; we also do our part for the community, economy, and the environment. These are the values we promote and live by that make us the top choice for a Peruvian tour company that makes a difference.

  1. Economic Responsibility

Just as Mother Nature gives us abundant resources and amazing wonders, it is only right that we give back what She deserves. This is the primary reason why we give back to the community. We believe that paying it forward is one of the best ways to create a world worth living in.

Below are some of the ways we give back to the community and contribute to the economy:

  • We recruit porters, kitchen staff, and horsemen from local communities. The knowledge, skills, and expertise of our staff have become integral to the success of our tours.
  • In 20XX, we offered a sizeable amount of donations to fund a school in the community of Sacsayhuaman (where children used to walk two hours each way to the nearest school under the sun, rain, hail, or snow).
  • We continue to donate a percentage of every trek we do directly to the school.
  • We invite tourists and travelers to visit local shops and support livelihoods in the region.
  • By providing job opportunities to the community, using local supplies and services, and contributing to local revenues, we are supporting the economy and helping communities raise their standards of living.
  1. Environmental Responsibility

We believe that every individual bears a responsibility to the environment—to maintain its preservation and sustainability for a better and more comfortable living space for the generations to come. And this does not exempt us, that’s why at Action Peru Treks, we exert the best of our efforts to take care of our surroundings and uphold environmental stewardship.

Below are some of the ways we show our love and care for the environment:

  • We conserve biological and cultural diversity in all the routes we take and destinations we go to. As part of this, we advise and remind our customers of the following important nature rules while trekking:
    • Do not scare animals you meet along the way
    • Do not litter.
    • Do not contaminate rivers and camps.
    • Do not pick flowers or damage the plants.
    • Do not climb the Inca walls.
    • Avoid using plastic water bottles that may contaminate the environment.
  • We use solar panels and lamps, charging them with solar energy during the day and using them in the tents at night.
  • We provide our customers with biodegradable soap and special biodegradable plastic bags for toilet use. These materials eventually decompose without harming the environment.
  • We recycle paper in our office and utilize both sides before discarding it.
  • We practice paperless advertising. We stopped using flyers and shifted to online advertising.
  • We promote environmental and cultural awareness not only to the local communities but to travelers from different parts of the world, too. We encourage them to participate in local ecotourism activities.
  • We conserve the use of hot water.
  • Instead of using disposable plastic bottles, we recommend bringing reusable Nalgene bottles or the CamelBak hydration pack.
  • We make sure to respect and abide by Peru’s customs, traditions, religion, and culture at all times.
  1. Eco-Friendly Practices

At Action Peru Treks, we respect and honor the entire region, especially the majestic trails, ancient ruins, and sacred sites we frequently visit. We are 100% eco-friendly—and we don’t say it just because we want to be part of a trend or to use these buzzwords that have recently become popular on talk shows, commercials, and product packaging.

For us, we define “eco-friendly” as being Earth-friendly or not harmful to the environment. More than using products that are labeled “eco-friendly,” we engage in eco-friendly habits and practices by being more conscious of how we use our resources. Additionally, we stand by this “Leave No Trace” tourism.

  1. ‘Leave No Trace’ Tourism

One of the environmental risks of operating a tour company is that people may not be fully aware of how to properly care for nature and their surroundings. At Action Peru Treks, we understand the potential harm that can come from taking groups through many of the delicate environments, natural areas, and sanctuary parks in which we operate.

Thus, we uphold a policy called ‘Leave No Trace’ tourism. We go to great lengths to ensure that we do not harm the areas we pass through, but instead, promote responsible and sustainable tourism. We do this through the following means:

  • Before and during their trip, we clearly inform our participants about the impact they can have on the community and environment.
  • We keep the trails clean and undisturbed to ensure that future Peruvians and visitors from around the world will be able to witness and appreciate the beauty of these historic sites and landscapes.
  • We respect and observe the values and practices of low-impact tourism, and we conduct all of our tours adhering to strict responsible travel principles. We make sure that our participants do the same thing, as well.
  • We work together to protect our fragile communities, cultures, economies, and environments.
  • Littering is banned on our treks. All rubbish and waste materials are transported out and disposed of in suitable facilities in the main towns.
  • We encourage travelers to bring water purification tablets or water filters on the trek and refillable bottles as this reduces the use of plastic bottles.
  • In campsites that do not have proper flush toilets, we use a portable toilet and toilet tent. We also use special biodegradable toilet bags which are carried out or buried.
  • We only use clean burning fuel (butane gas) for cooking.
  1. Social Responsibility

Of course, we do not forget our responsibility towards people and the society as a whole. Action Peru Treks ensures that all our tours, operations, and other services are designed for societal improvement and sustainable development.

Below are some of the ways we showcase our values and social responsibilities:

  • We use English as our medium of communication. We are proud to say all of our expert local guides speak English very well, in addition to Spanish and other languages, too.
  • Our guides are extremely professional, but friendly and approachable. They are always happy to meet new people and share their knowledge with them.
  • We train our staff to achieve professional growth and career advancement. Starting from doing office work, such as taking bookings and providing customer service, they move up to being porters and chefs, until they become official tour guides.
  • Our staff undergoes compulsory training throughout February, such as first-aid training from a real doctor.
  • We employ local citizens and pay them a fair wage monthly. They also receive free health insurance for themselves and their families, as well as various bonuses throughout the year.
  • All our porters receive free accident and life insurance which covers them throughout the year.
  • We treat our staff and workers in the best way possible. We understand that by giving them the trust and respect they deserve, apart from a good salary and work benefits, they will go the extra mile and stay loyal to the company.
  • We contribute directly to local projects in the Cusco region.
  • Through our free Immersion Program in the Andean Village, we are enabling our customers to culturally learn and experience being a part of the Quechua village.
  • We let our customers experience eating and enjoying a traditional Andean meal while having an opportunity to be educated about many aspects of life in a customary Andean village.
  • We encourage giving and donating to the natives and local people in the community. If our customers have old clothes or extra food to spare, we tell them that the local people will be more than happy to receive them.
  • We allow our customers to participate in agricultural activities, learn about Peruvian customs, and hear interesting stories from the local community members. These activities will further raise their awareness about the locals’ way of living in Peru.
  • We encourage tourists and travelers to participate in native music and dance.
  • Finally, we never forget to remind our customers to respect the traditions and customs in every site and village we visit, as it is very important for the communities that these are preserved.

Experience a life-changing journey in Peru with Action Peru Treks. We make your travel plans come true without compromising on quality or satisfaction while prioritizing sustainability, environmental preservation, and economic development.

Prioritizing the Safety and Welfare of Our Porters

We can never overstate the importance of porters in our tour services. They are the most valuable players of the Inca Trail, and we truly could not function without them. They are the hardest working people during the trek and have the most challenging jobs, yet they never forget to share their smiles with the travelers.

At Action Peru Treks, we recognize the value and hard work of our porters. We are fully aware of their rights, and we make sure that these rights are given to them and fully protected. In fact, we consider our porters as part of our family, showing them respect, kindness, and fairness at all times. We pay our porters above-average salaries, and they frequently receive excellent tips because of their impeccable service.

Following the Inca Trail Porters Protection New Law No. 31614 (The Congress of the Peruvian Republic Lima, on November 11th, 2022) / Decreed Law Number 31614, the porters at Action Peru Treks are:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Given fair and decent payments for their work
  • Included in the tour from the point of departure to the end of the trip
  • Instructed to carry loads up to 20 kilograms only
  • Given decent accommodation and equipment
  • Provided with special belts to protect their backs from injuries
  • Given the appropriate number of hours for rest and sleep during the trip
  • Provided with sufficient food and appropriate clothing, such as warm jacket, rain ponchos, walking boots, and backpacks
  • Given fair and decent payment on time, specifically on the 4th day of the tour at 10:00 AM
  • Given life and accident insurance from the Social Security Health
  • Provided with special assistance for them and their families.

Protecting the Flora and Fauna in the Andes

Part of our care and respect for the Peruvian lands and environment is our huge desire to protect the biotic ecosystem of the region. We treat plants and animals with kindness and compassion, knowing that we are only passers-by in their natural home.

Aside from our team, we also advise, encourage, and remind travelers not to disturb the animals and plants on the trails, parks, and sanctuaries. We constantly educate them about the importance of preserving the natural habitat of these living creatures so they can continue to thrive and do their part in the cycle of life.

At Action Peru Treks, we pride ourselves on the quality of care we give to our working animals. We work with mules and horses in our non-Inca Trail hikes and make sure that they are fed, bathed, and attended to in the best possible way.
